Re: GL1200A (1984) CB -last channel

Any 1200 rider got the answer to this one?... my CB works fine but every time I power down, then start back up the CB comes on to channel 9. Is this the way its supposed to work or should it come on to the last channel prior to power down?
If the later is true, there must be an always-hot wire to the CB to keep the memory alive?, or is it stored in an eprom type memory? |

Your channel 9 button is probably pushed in, it does get sticky. look at it closely you will see a small arrow and the button just push on the button in that corner and it should pop out.

The button does work properly i.e. if pushed in it stays in and channel 9 is held regardless of what I do with the up/down channel selector on the handlebar. Push again and it stays out, and I can change channels no problem... so I don't think that's the issue.
Any other ideas? Think I'll yank it out and take it apart checking for poor connections/fuses/wires broken). I just don't know if the CB is SUPPOSED to always revert back to ch 9 on power up? (in which case nothing is wrong). Answer anyone? |

It sounds like you're losing your memory function. Does your radio hold presets? If so, check the red wire (battery supply) at the points indicated. Should have battery voltage at all times. Make sure the terminals are clean and tight. If everything is correct, the problem is in the tranceiver (cb) |

Radio does hold presets. Only CB doesn't hold the last channel. In addition, the CB channel toggle switch will only scroll down, not up... had switch all apart, cleaned, is in good shape but still won't scroll up. That one sounds like a bad connection, so maybe the memory is same issue... I just haven't heard yet if the normal behaviour is to remember the last channel before power down.... or not?
Thanks |

Mine holds the last channel used. The only time the cb reverts to channel 9 is loss of all power. (disconnecting the battery, etc)

Perfect. Thanks. Now I know I have to find a wire that's supposed to be hot all the time. Any idea where I can get the pinout diagram for the CB wire harness connector?

This info is exactly what I need. Last night found two corroded wires... what a bear getting the connectors out of the LH inside fairing.
Question: in the diagram, the red wire (table left side top of page) labelled "E" is called out as AlX ... I assume this means its hot when accessory or ON is selected by keyswitch? |

Looking at this full diagram if the red wire provides memory power for the radio then it does supply the same for the CB

Mission accomplished. Right you are Tricky. Thank you all for excellent help.
Found red corroded in the connector and only conducting .9V Also, since orange was next to it, suffered same fate. Both wires replaced (jumped around connector) - everything works perfect. Pulled both male and female all connectors passing through R side of fairing.. cleaned, inspected, greased up... good for another 10 yrs. |

A lot of problems are created in that area because of moisture and the general rule of thump dont fix it if it is working. A thorough examination of all the connectors in the left pocket and application of some di-electric grease to keep the moisure at bay on occasion is good.

Well done GL and Tricky. Sometimes I think that your nicknames should be Accurate and Precise rather than GL or Tricky.
