Carb Removal 1985 Aspencade

Start by removing the lower fairing covers, inner covers, tank shelter, side covers and seat. You should have a fairly wide open work space.


Remove the air filter and air filter cover. Remove the four screws holding the air filter case.


Remove the two screws holding the air filter element holder.


Remove the vacuum line from the 3-way joint (took me awhile to find this)


Make sure your fuel is cut off at the petcock. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump. Be ready to plug the end of the line, since fuel will run out of the carbs.


Remove the right and left carburetor covers (they have been removed in this photo)


Remove the leads from the spark plugs, remove the wires from the holders.


I went ahead and disconnected the spark plug leads from the coils since I plan on installing new wires.

Remove the vacuum control tube.


Loosen the clamping screws on the intake rubber couplers.


Remove the bolts securing the intake pipes. Gently pry around the rubbers and remove the intake pipes.


Lift the four secondary air supply tubes from both cylinder heads.




Place a shop cloth over the left hand cylinders. Lift the whole carb assembly and start working it towards the left side of the bike until you can get to the throttle cables.


Back off the lock nut on the cables until you can slide the cable holders out of the brackets. Slide the barrel end on the cable out of the throttle wheel. Tie the cables up and out of the way.


Follow the choke cable down to the front of the bank, loosen the screw holding the choke cable and remove the barrel end from the choke linkage.
Sometimes you find all kinds of surprises.


Evict the tenants and carry on.


You can now work the assembly on out of the frame.

This is not as daunting of a project as it first appears, as is typical on a Wing, removing the plastics takes longer than the job

Frank I am going to be replacing my throttle cables, how far into this if all do I need to go to get to them?

If you look at the 6th picture down from the top you can see where they hook up just left of the shiny carb top. There is like zero room there. Even when you remove the air filter case at the top you still can't see em. Even though there are keepers to hold the cable nuts on they are usually so stuck that you have to get two 10mm wrenches in there to hold and turn them loose. I'm afraid you are gonna be just one step away from having them completely out. I would have my new o-rings handy just in case so you won't be waiting or trying to run them down. It will be a good time to clean under there

When I looked at your pictures it looked like a bigger job then I had hoped for, but thought just maybe it just look like i had to remove everything to get to them. The carbs were just rebuilt at the end of last summer. They used all new parts instead of just cleaning. Why they didn't replace the original cables at that time is beyond me. They are sticking now. I could clean and lube them but if I am going to go through all that work I will be putting new ones in. Thanks for the information.

Our bike is touchy as to how you route the cables on the left side out from under the "false tank" bodywork. Any kind of pinch here will cause the throttle to bind a bit and stick off idle.
