'84 GL1200 Aspencade - Choke Cable Replacment
I bought a new choke cable, as mine broke. I have a clymer manual and attempted to change it myself. The pictures show a lot more clearance at the front of the carb assembly where the choke cable terminates than is on my bike. It "seems" damn near impossible to get to it without removing the radiator and the metal shield (held in place by the motor mounts) that is in front of the engine. Is it really that hard to get to? I can't even get my fingers in there, much less any tools. I would hate to pay $75/hour for labor to replace a $13 part but I'm just not gonna take half the bike apart myself. Has anyone tried this themselves?

Yes, tolerances are that tight. But you don't have to take too much apart. Remove the air box and the faux tank. Remove both lower fairing skirts. Unbolt the intake runners and slide the carbs out a couple of inches toward the left side of the bike. You'll find two phillips headed screws at the front of the plenum that hold the choke cable BRACKET. Remove the screws (magnetic screw driver) and pull the cable out still attached to the bracket.
Install in reverse order. (I've always wanted to say that!)
