Are GL1200 mufflers interchangeable?
Gonna need a quick response to this question. The parts manual lists five different numbers for GL1200 mufflers (84 Standard; 84-85 Interstate and Aspencade; 86-87 Interstate and Aspencade; 85 Ltd; and 86 SEi). Are any of these mufflers interchangeable?

And what about the header pipes? Are these interchangeable across the years and models? Thanks!

I know there are changes between 84-85 and 86 but I thought they were just cosmetic such as removable chrome sections on the headers on the 86+
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

The head pipes are the same for 84-85, they are different for 86-87. But like tricky said, they are just "constructed" differently. I just pulled my engine and found a header rusted through. Couldn't find one readily for an '86, so I used an '84 I had laying around. NO problems. To the best of my knowledge, the mufflers are the same, except that the standard had round tips as the rest were oval.

My 86 aspy has the removable chrome section on the headers and a friend of mine that I ride with has put an 85 exhaust system on his 86 interstate. I don't think he had any problems installing them.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane
