Let's talk carbs!
I was curious as I looked at Randaak's new kit.

When would you rebuild?

Are there any other adjustments than a carb sync?

I ask for a couple reasons.

First off my bike runs smooth and doesn't even skip.

What I sometimes feel I am lacking is acceleration. Not that it does not pull but some people here talk about the bike as if it out performs most bikes where as mine is just slightly faster than my old vt500.

The next thing is mileage.

I get 37.5 if I try real hard on a long trip (at about 75mph) but normally it is closer to 30 around town.

Seems low to me.

What steps would you take to improve at least the mileage?

Already have new plugs, fresh oil and kn air filter...

my idle sucks.. the acceleration from 0 to 2300 rpm is rough, i get like 13 kilometers per liter on highway and like 7 on the city, if you stand on the back of the bike it smells to gas, and ur eyes would start crying.

first thing i would to is to get that kid and rebuild my carbs..

i just want to get some for dummies guide =(

Check here if you smell gasoline http://gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?t=958

You would rebuild the carbs if you have a rough running engine and the ignition is known to be good, if there are visible signs of leakage from the carbs or connecting tubes or if you can't get the idle jets to make any difference in adjustment or if there are high miles on the carbs and you want to visibly inspect for internal wear on the carbs.

One major item to inspect if your fuel ecoomy is low is the vacuum hose that runs from the inside of #4 carb to the ECU up above the ignition coils, this hose must be in good condition otherwise your fuel economy will drop substantially. Also a good clean air filter is a must for good fuel economy, as well as correct tire air pressure and free running brake calipers and last but not least a good carb synchronyzation.

Has anyone noticed when rebuilding the carbs that on the number 1 carb, the needle valve under the diafram has worn more then the other three carbs?

What needle valve under what diaphragm? Have you got a picture of that?

I guess Honda calls it a slide needle part # 16151-ML8-721. It goes inside the Emulsion Tube ( part # 16165-ML8-741 ) underneith the diaphragm from the top of the carbs.
I checked with Honda and they are discontinued.
Does anyone know where thay can be found?

Now I get the picture clearly. You may not find a new one but check with Karl at kwhiter@satx.rr.com and see if he happens to have a perfect used one that he can sell you.
